Establishing a food-safety system based on agricultural immunology to produce healthy agricultural products, livestock, and marine products
Our mission is to develop new technologies that utilize the innate and acquired immunity of living things to produce healthy agricultural products, livestock, and marine products. We also aim to develop systems to evaluate the safety and functionality of food produced using these novel technologies, to be applied in the food industry. We have overseas centers in the United States and the Netherlands, making it possible to train researchers overseas in next-generation research techniques in the field of agricultural immunology.

The world's first international center for education and agronomy research, specializing in "food and agricultural immunity" was established in April 2015 at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Agricultural Science. The center�fs main area of research is the field of agronomy including crops, livestock, and marine products. Cross-disciplinary research in "agricultural immunity" focuses on developing systems based on utilizing natural, innate immunity of respective organisms to produce disease-free crops, livestock, and marine products. The center also strives to develop new systems to comprehensively evaluate the safety and functionality of food products. Resources have been allocated to train young researchers who can successfully perform research on food and agricultural immunity on a global scale. We have taken the first step toward next-generation techniques to produce safe and functional food.
1. To establish a new academic field of "agricultural immunity" via cross-disciplinary research on immunology and agronomy, namely crops, livestock, and marine products.
2. To set up a system to produce crops, livestock, and marine products that does not rely solely on drugs. Additionally, to develop systems to evaluate the safety and functionality of food as well as perform diagnosis in terms of physical and social sciences.
3. To contribute to the globalization of Tohoku University by training young researchers who will take next-generation research techniques forward, in the fields of agricultural immunity and food science.
4. To commercially apply the new food systems thus developed in the field, thereby contributing to public health and longevity.
