How to apply
Three methods can be used to apply for the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship.
Beside them, Self-financed foreign students may be eligible for scholarships under the JASSO Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students, or for scholarships offered by private foundations.
The Faculty of Agriculture offers undergraduate programs for the Bachelor's Degree, and the Graduate School of Agricultural Science offers graduate programs leading to Master's and Doctoral degrees. Many of these programs are available in Japanese only.
The undergraduate Applied Marine Biology (AMB) course and the postgraduate Food & Agriculture for Human Security Program are fully English taught programs. Please refer to the FGL website for more information.
- Undergraduate programs
The program for the Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Science consists of 4 years of course work presented in Japanese.
International students who wish to study on the Japanese-taught courses must sit the general Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU), conducted by the Association of International Education in Japan (AIEJ). Applied Marine Biology (AMB) Course
The Applied Marine Biology (AMB) course is available in English. International students who wish to enroll on the English-taught AMB Course have two options to apply, based upon documentation submitted after sitting the following examinations:
(1) EJU (English version) and TOEFL (or accepted equivalent)
(2) home-country standardized national examinations and TOEFL (or accepted equivalent).

- Graduate programs
The Graduate School of Agricultural Science offer master's and doctoral degree programs presented in Japanese. The Master's Degree program takes usually 2 years, and the Doctoral Program usually takes an additional 3 years.
The entrance examination for admission in Japanese language is carried out twice in August and January, and usually the deadlines for them are set in the mid-July and the mid-December, respectively.
International students are able to take the Special Entrance Examination for Foreign Students. Usually, the examination is held in January, and its application-deadline is set in the early-December. The application for the examination is required to be submitted through individual laboratories. For details, contact with laboratories in which you are interested.
- Food & Agriculture for Human Security Program
Tohoku University started the International Joint Educational Program of Human Security from April 2005, on the basis of mutual collaboration among four graduate schools comprising the Graduate School of Agricultural Science, of Medicine, of International Cultural Studies and of Environmental Studies. The Graduate School of Agricultural Science intends to contribute this program in the sector of food and agrarian issues.
