ON THE COVER: A rice plant with CW-type cytoplasmic male sterility (CW-CMS) is deficient in pollen tube germination on stigma. In this issue, Fujii and Toriyama (pp. 633–640) demonstrate that knockdown of DCW11, which encodes a putative mitochondrial protein 2C phosphatase protein, by RNAi caused a major loss of seed-set fertility, without visible defect in pollen development. Since the phenotype resembled that of CW-CMS, the authors conclude that the down-regulation of DCW11 is strongly correlated with CW-CMS, and DCW11 could play a role in a mitochondrial signal transduction mediator in pollen germination. The cover photo shows a fluorescent microscopic image of wild-type pollen germinated on stigma. Pollen tubes are visualized after aniline blue staining.
