Sho Yamada (D2, Laboratory of International Development Studies) wins The Best Poster Research Presentation Award 2024

From November 9 to 10, 2024, the Joint Annual Conference of the Japan Association for Human Security Studies and the Japan Societies for International Development was held at Hosei University and JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development. Mr. Sho Yamada, a second-year doctoral student in the field of international development studies (supervised by Professor Katsuhito Fuyuki), won “The Best Poster Research Presentation Award 2024.” The title of his research presentation was “The Sri Lankan government’s actions concerning residential areas for conflict-displaced persons – Case of Muthur, Trincomalee.” This research multifacetedly analyzed the loss of land ownership experienced by farmers who had lived as evacuees for about eight years due to the conflict in Sri Lanka and their process of returning to their original lands. It particularly focused on how the land was lost during the evacuation period and how the government was involved. Interest in this issue, which may have also involved Japan, was very high. Moreover, his research, which focuses on “rural villages and farmers after conflict,” was highly praised for its use of primary sources based on unique field surveys and for presenting important lessons for post-conflict rural development, an area that has seen few studies worldwide.
