Introduction

Total synthesis of bioactive natural products to contribute to the development of new medicines and agrochemicals

Many organic compounds obtained from natural resources such as plants, animals, and microorganisms have various physiological effects on living organisms and human beings have used them as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, fragrances, etc. Most of these natural products, however, can be obtained only in small amounts from nature, and as a result, they have been buried without even their basic biological studies being conducted in spite of their beneficial biological activities for humankind,

Our laboratory is studying the total synthesis of medicinally as well as agrochemically important natural products such as antibiotics, anticancer substances, quorum sensing inhibitors, insecticidal and herbicidal compounds, plant hormones, and insect pheromones. By conducting such synthetic studies, we would like to contribute to the development of basic organic chemistry and, in addition, to the progress of biological studies directed toward the practical application of bioactive natural products through their sufficient supply by chemical synthesis. In the process of research, we work on the development of efficient synthetic strategies and new chemical reactions and make it a goal to create practical medicines and agrochemicals by modifying the chemical structures of natural products.
